*July 4th, 2005 - We lost Jack Mendenhall this morning. See www.oilstick.com.  (Evelyn Roth)
Editor's notes: Jack Mendenhall and his family and friends created the Museum of Gasoline
Pumps in Buellton, California. The Gold Coast Roadster and Racing Club uses this Museum
to hold their Annual Gas-Up Party and Dry Lakes Hall of Fame Bar-B-Que and Awards
ceremony.  Jack organized the Security Team at Black Rock Desert in 1997, for the British
and American attempts at the Land Speed Record.  He was involved in Jalopy, stock car, oval
track, drag and landspeed racing throughout a fabled career.  His car, The Pea Soup Andersen
Special is on display at the Vic Edelbrock Museum in Torrance.  A restored Jalopy, owned by
Pete Van Eiderstein, was named in Mendenhall's honor and is on display at the Wally Parks
NHRA Motorsports Museum, in Pomona, California.  Jack was a member of the SCTA/BNI
200 MPH Club, and a member of the Dry Lakes Hall of Fame. His museum is one of the best
in the world in depicting signs, globe faces and gas pumps from the early decades of American
motoring representing what garages and service stations were like.  His collections have been
displayed in the Petersen Automotive Museum and other exhibits throughout California. For
all of his achievements, the one that we will remember the most about Jack will be the twinkle in
his eyes and the good natured way he treated people.  He was a generous man and a gentleman
who made everyone feel welcomed and appreciated.  See www.oilstick.com for funeral or
memorial services and schedules. Richard Parks
*We all thought it would be a nice gesture if the whole country would set off a load of fire-
works, in his memory, today. He sure did enjoy setting his off on the 4th of July. (W. Scott)

having an MRI on his back.  He at this point can't walk & is using a wheel chair.   (Steve

land speed racers who have dedicated their lives to go as fast as their ingenuity and mechanical
skills would take them.  It is also an opportunity to see the fabulous Gas Pump Museum.  Mark
and Vickie Mendenhall and their family and friends will serve the best Santa Maria Style Tri-Tip
Steak and Beans Bar-B-Cue that you will ever eat.  (From Evelyn Roth)

*Received this favorable salt report from Ray Kelsey with the Salt Lake BLM today. You might
also mention that we have a tentative date to do our "Pre-Trip" to lay out our courses for this
years events. It looks like the week of July 18th. (Tentative only) Thanks Mike Waters
"I was out on the salt just yesterday. It looks to me like the salt is in better shape this year
than last. Coverage around the end of the access road looks better this year. There was no
standing water anywhere except a few small holes but the salt was still very slushy because
of remaining moisture. But I think that will dry up pretty well in the next month. Looking
forward to this year's events. Good luck."  Ray Kelsey, Outdoor Recreation Planner, Salt
Lake Field Office, Bureau of Land Management.
*Wayne County Speedway, Orrville, Ohio. The 2nd Wayne County Speedway Faster Pastor

*On September 2, 1973, the 17th short track race of the year, tragedy was to strike again. Pat
  Pattison
, the 42-year-old NASCAR track steward for the event from Long Beach, was struck
and killed instantly. The mishap occurred when a pack of 14 cars running together had one of the
lead cars blow an engine, dumping oil onto the track. Several of the cars lost control and spun,
hitting each other and spinning into the infield. George Jefferson of Naches, Washington, crew
chief for driver Harry Jefferson, was struck by one car and Pattison ran to help him. Pattison
was hit by another car and thrown approximately 60 feet. He was pronounced dead on arrival at
the local hospital. Jefferson suffered two broken legs, facial lacerations, a broken jaw and internal
injuries. Pat Pattison was born in the Bronx, New York, on March 4, 1931 and had an active
racing career in Islip, New York. After the second World War, he was a factory rider for Indian
motorcycles and a stock car racer until physical injuries curtailed his racing careers.  His wife,
Jenny Pattison, was an important part of West Coast racing, working from the scoring booths.
She stayed with it a year or so after Pat's death. His son John is currently a full-time official with
the NASCAR West, Grand National Series.  West Coast Stock Car Hall Of Fame is at

*The Longest Season: 1972. By Tim Meyer. The final points standings had Lee Elder 40 points
ahead of Hershel McGriff, and an unprecedented fourth championship. Plymouth won the
Manufacturer's Championship with 15 wins, while Dodge captured the other 12 events. Only six
cars had been able to start all 30 races. Elder won an amazing $56,000, which included $10,000
Championship money from Winston, and a sizeable purse and winnings of the Golden State 400
at Riverside International Raceway. McGriff weighed in at $37,700, with Dick Bown $20,000
and Jack McCoy $21,700.  Remember this was 1972, when the average yearly income was
$11,800. A new home cost a little over $27,000 and new cars averaged $3,853.  This was the
first year of competition for the Grand National East, when the Winston Cup division had separ-
ated the short tracks off their schedule. And their first champion was Neil Soapy Castles. The
longest season was over now, and ageless 45-year-old Hershel McGriff had a fantastic season
battling Ray Elder for the championship right down to the wire and winning 12 races, bringing his
Winston West Total to 18.  Elder had a fantastic year as we, doing what most people consid-
ered impossible: winning his fourth straight GNW title-the first man to ever do so. Elder won
seven races during the year, to bring his career total to 31, second only to Jack McCoy's 35.
Carl Adams, billed as the 30-year-old bachelor from Lemon Grove, California, was Rookie of
the Year (6th overall in points), after starting 28 of 30 races, barely edging out Bill Butts of El
Cajon and Sonny Easley of Van Nuys.  For more info on the West Coast Stock Car Hall Of

*Editor's notes: Here's a newsreport from the past sent in by Tim Meyer:  "In the week of hype
leading up to the Riverside race (February 2, 1969, Pacific Coast Late Model Race #1,
Grand National (Nextel Cup) Combined Event), the following article, partially quoted
hereafter, appeared in the Riverside newspaper along with several trade papers. The
headline, read: Hippie-Hater Won’t Allow Long Hair on Riverside 500 Drivers.  The
Riverside grounds trembled last week as the embodiment of George Wallace’s Alabama
country charm, Bill Gazaway, pronounced his ponderous decisions over astounded drivers,
mechanics, press personnel, and garage area visitors. Gazaway, Chief NASCAR Grand
National Technical Inspector, and self-proclaimed hippie reformer, proclaimed in ponder-
ous rhetoric that “There ain’t going to be no long hair or beards in the Grand National
garage area.”  The amazed southern California hippie-besieged public tuned in daily for
each continuing episode of the Gazaway long hair rebellion, which drew just about as
much attention on the radio and the newspapers as the other events underway at the
Riverside Raceway. Gazaway’s intent on having his whole garage area wearing that “I
just got a hair cut” look carried his ultimatum a little to the extreme.  NASCAR had a big
problem with anything but the white pants, fresh-scrubbed look, and didn’t allow women
or other “undesirables” in the pits."
